Veulah S. Wilson, 96, died April 11, 2015 in Bartow. She was born in 1919 on a cattle ranch near Ten Sleep, Wyoming. Her parents were William H. Small and Lula Johnson Small.
She grew up in Bartow, graduated from Summerlin Institute, now Bartow High School, and in 1942 she married her high school sweetheart Donald H. Wilson. They were married for 67 years and raised four children in their home on South Oak Avenue in Bartow. Donald died at the age of 93 in 2008.
Veulah always had a great interest in art, and she was a founding member of the Bartow Art Guild. For many years she was on the committees for the Bartow Spring Arts Show, the Blooming Arts Festival and the Bartow Quilt Show. She taught art for a number of years at the Oaks School in Bartow. She was also active in the Bartow Garden Club and was on the advisory board for the Florida Sheriff’s Girls Villa, now Youth Villa.
Veulah was part of the feminine side of the Greatest Generation, being raised during the Great Depression, working on the home front for the national effort during World War II, and contributing her part to the baby boom that followed.
Always at the center of her life was the circle of her family, her church and her community. As part of her Southern heritage, she strictly adhered to the belief that a homemade cake or plate of cookies was a remedy for the difficult times of life or an appropriate contribution to the celebration of the good times.
She was predeceased by her daughter Darlene and son Gary. She is survived by a sister Gloria Syme of Seneca, South Carolina; her daughter Carolyn Albritton (Dale) of Alturas, Florida, son Donald H. Wilson (Holly) of Homeland, Florida; grandchildren Jeff Albritton and Laura McGinnis (Andy); and great grandchildren Meredith McGinnis, Elizabeth McGinnis, Allie Albritton, Isaac Albritton and Reagan Albritton.
