Shelton Locklear

With deep love and sadness, we announce the passing of , 79, of Bartow, Florida. Shelton passed away peacefully at his home on July 29, 2026. Shelton was a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was born in Lumberton, North Carolina on August 5, 1946, to Mazline & Hubert Locklear. He grew up working in the cotton and tobacco fields alongside his 11 brothers and 2 sisters. Shelton worked for the Polk County School Board for 30 years as a carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar, family and church. He was affiliated with the Church of God. Shelton built a life centered on service, faith and family. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered for his devotion, unforgettable laugh and the love he gave so freely. He was preceded in death by his father & mother, Hubert & Mazline Locklear, brothers Linwood, Junior, Gerald, Jack, Artemis & Wayne Locklear, sister Ann Sowell and son Jason Locklear. He is survived by his daughters Kathy Chapman (Anthony) & Karla Benson (Bernard) both of Simpsonville, SC, sister Carlene Pridgen, brothers Kenneth Locklear, Freddie Locklear , H.L. Locklear, Kermit Locklear & Glenn Locklear, 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Shelton is a proud member of the Lumbee Tribe. He will be deeply missed by many. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Oak Hill Burial Park, Lakeland.
