Nancy Varn Bevis

Nancy Ann Varn Bevis, 82 of Tallahassee and formerly of Fort Meade, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2011 in Tallahassee. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, EDT, Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Meade, Florida. The Rev. Jerry Conner will celebrate. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 28, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at McLean Funeral Home, 306 East Broad Street in Fort Meade (863/285-2333). Gifts in memory of Mrs. Bevis may be made to the Delta Delta Delta Foundation, Post Office Box 5987, Arlington, TX 76005-5987 (info@trideltaeo.org). Mrs. Bevis was born in Fort Meade, November 11, 1928 to David Hugh and Erma Sidney Strain Varn. She graduated from Fort Meade High School and was a graduate of Florida State University ( Class of 1950), where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Following graduation she taught in Frostproof for three years, before marrying her husband of thirty two years, William Hinson Bevis, Sr., who passed away December 31, 2010. They made their home in Fort Meade until moving to Tallahassee in 1971. She was a past President of Florida State University Pan-Hellenic, was a member of the Tallahassee Garden Club, as well as being active in many other civic organizations. Her philanthropic character showed through her work with many charitable organizations and Tri Delta Sorority. She was also active with her families citrus interests and was a stock holder in the Peace River Packing Company. She and her family were also longtime members and benefactors of the Fort Meade Presbyterian Church, and she was a longtime member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee. Survivors include two sons, William H. Bevis, Jr. and his wife Mary Warren Bevis and Hugh Thomas Bevis and his wife Sharon Adams Bevis; her daughter, Irma M. Bevis Camp and her husband Richard Engram Camp; and grandchildren, William Hinson Bevis, III, Laura Sidney Bevis, Elizabeth Rose Bevis, Amy Ann Bevis, Thomas Hugh Bevis, Nancy Margaret Camp, Cole Engram Camp and Robert Conley Camp. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Strain Varn Fort and Fidelia Varn Jahna. Mrs. Bevis was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Dr. David Hugh Varn, Jr. and Bernard Shaw Varn. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of Seven Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center of Tallahassee for all their consideration and compassion over the past twenty months.
