Mayme Burdin Clark

January 8, 1932 — February 2, 2022

Mayme Burdin Clark, Civic Leader. Mayme Burdin Clark, 90, died February 2, 2022 at her Bartow home. During her last days, she was surrounded by family and close friends. She was born January 8, 1932, in Elkton, Kentucky, the youngest of five siblings of Wilburn and Lois Shanklin. As a civic leader, Mayme gave her time and talent to make Bartow a better place during her 30 years as the Bartow Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, and continued to remain active in community affairs after her retirement. Mayme was dedicated to her work for the city and to her friends and family. She was often the first to offer her skills in support of business development and civic improvement and also to friends and family. She multiplied her own spirit of volunteerism during her years with the Chamber in which she recruited and inspired countless community members to work toward making Bartow a place where its residents, businesses, and government agencies could thrive. Some of her achievements, with the support of those volunteers, include the gala dedication of the new Bartow Civic Center; the initiation of O. J. Breakfasts and Fun Thursdays to foster networking; the organization of industry recruitment, ultimately leading to the Committee of 100 as an economic development arm of the Chamber. She was especially proud of the Chamber Accreditation. She also launched Leadership Bartow, promoted the development of the local Crime Fighters organization, and brought Youth Villa to Bartow and organized the Youth Villa Golf Tournament. With the same enthusiasm she brought to community activism, she was a gracious host for gatherings small and large from intimate dinners with friends, regular bridge luncheons, to her annual Derby party for 200. She enjoyed bringing people together for good food and good conversation. In her leisure time, Mayme enjoyed golf, bridge, and travel with family and friends. Mayme was preceded in death by her first husband, John Burdin, and her second husband, Richard Clark. She is survived by her children, John Burdin (Bartow) and Trish Pfeiffer and husband, Bob Pfeiffer (Bartow); and her grandchildren, Allison Mabe (Winston Salem, NC), Melissa Mutz (New Orleans), Cathrine Pfeiffer (Key Largo), and Lilly Hicks (Bartow). Her Celebration of Life will be Saturday, February 12th, 2022 at First United Methodist Church, 310 S. Broadway Avenue, Bartow, Florida at 11:00am followed by a gathering of family and friends at her home 950 Square Lake Drive, Bartow, FL. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First United Methodist Church of Bartow or the Bartow Church Service Center. Condolences to family at www.whiddenmcleanfuneralhome.com
