Mrs. Mary Jo Smith, age 84, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 from complications of an acute infection. Born April 22, 1926 in Esom Hill, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late David K. and Beulah Woodward. Mary Jo was a Physical Education Teacher for the Polk County School Board. She was also a board member and participant in the Polk County Senior Games. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Bartow Women's Golf Assn., and active in the Bartow Performing Arts Council. She was an active community member and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bartow. Along with her parents, Mary Jo is preceded in death by her husband Fred P. Smith and 3 sisters and 1 brother. She is survived by a loving family that includes two daughters; Susan S. Prevatt (Allan) of Bartow, Teresa "Tee" Argenbright (Keith) of Fort Worth, TX, three grandchildren; Kathryn Grenig, Kyle Argenbright, and Leslie Argenbright. She also leaves behind a sister, Jessie Gammage of Midland, GA, and a brother Fred Woodward of Cedartown, GA. Arrangements are being handled by Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 East Main Street in Bartow, where the family will receive friends this evening April 29th from 6-8pm. Services will follow Friday April 30th at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Bartow, 410 East Church Street, Bartow, FL 33830. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the church at the same address.
