Julia Margaret (Peg) Phillips was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on August 9, 1924. Her parents were Julia and Leslie Kosa. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1942 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Western State Teachers College, now Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, in 1946. She taught elementary school in North Muskegon and in St. Joseph, Michigan before beginning her family. After she was married and living in St. Joseph, Michigan she served as Cub Scout Den Mother as well as a Sunday school teacher. She married John Milton Phillips in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on June 21, 1947. They raised two sons: Mark John of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Paul Milton of Apalachin, New York. Julia Margaret (Peg) is survived by two sons, Mark of Ypsilanti, Michigan and Paul and daughter-in-law, Debbie of Apalachin, New York. Granddaughter Dawn lives in Ohio with her husband Jeremy Carsman and great granddaughter Julia. Serveral cousins, nieces and nephews live throughout the United States. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Milton Phillips, parents, Julia and Leslie Kosa, sister and brother- in law Esther De Boer and Auke De Boer of Bartow, sister and brother -in- law, Rev Arpad and Helen Beretz of Munster, Indiana. She and her husband moved to Bartow, Florida in 1989. She was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She volunteered for years at the Church Service Center in Bartow where she and her husband were selected outstanding volunteers for the year 2001. After cremation the ashes will be interred in Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Memorials may be made to the Church Service Center or Asbury United Methodist Church in Bartow.
