Julia Lucille DeVane Mitchell

October 10, 1923 — September 21, 2025

Julia Lucille Devane Mitchell, age 101, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, September 21, 2025.

She was born on October 10, 1923, in Bereah, Florida, to Lacy and Julia DeVane. A lifelong resident of Fort Meade, Lucille graduated from Fort Meade High School, Class of 1941. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Meade, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was an active member of the Joy Club. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and the Fort Meade Historical Society.

Known as “Cile” or “Granny” to many, Lucille had a deep love for her family. She enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, and playing cards—always happiest when surrounded by loved ones.

Throughout her life, Mrs. Mitchell worked in and outside the home. During the war, she drove military trucks, later worked in the lunchroom at Fort Meade High School, and also at the local packing house.

Lucille was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Hershall Mitchell, as well as her siblings: Lacy DeVane, Jerry Pearce, Roy DeVane, Bobby DeVane, and Shirley Randall.

She is survived by her three children: daughters Linda Worthy (Bill) of Bowie, TX, and Beth Sequin (Roy) of Livonia, MI; and son Bill Mitchell (Val) of Nahunta, GA. She is also survived by her brother, Floyd DeVane; sisters Freida Martin (Bill) and Ginny Morris (Claude); five grandchildren: Brandi DeLeon (John), Theresa Chestnut (Jesse), Kristine Yurek, Brittney Mitchell, and Gretchen Narvaez (Tony); nine great-grandchildren: Taylor Myers, Autumn Myers, Harley Myers, Lindsy Chestnut, Savannah DeLeon, Tabetha Narvaez, Austin Narvaez, Elizabeth Narvaez, and Slade Narvaez; step great-grandson Dakota Chestnut (Brittany); and step great-great-grandchild, Jesse Dakota James Chestnut; along with numerous loving nieces, nephews, friends, and her devoted caregiver of many years, Iselande Fleurival.
