John Lee Singletary

Mr. John Lee Singletary, age 92, passed away from natural causes, Thursday, May 26, 2011 at his home in Bartow. Born September 15, 1918 in Thonotosassa, FL, Mr. Singletary was raised in Lakeland and a graduate of Lakeland High School, Class of 1939. He had been a resident of Bartow for 64 years, moving from Avon Park with his new bride. At the end of 37 years with the Atlantic Coastline/Seaboard Coastline Railroad Company, he retired as the Chief Clerk of the Mulberry Freight Office. Mr. Singletary was a member of the North Jackson Ave. Church of Christ for the past 64 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Nell W. Singletary, his brothers; L.W. "Walt" Singletary, and J.H. Singletary. He is survived by his son J. Nelson Singletary and wife Jean, daughter Janet Wickman and husband Robin all of Lakeland, Debbie Singletary of Bartow, sister-in-laws Dorothy Willeford of Frostproof, and Grace Singletary of Lakeland. He also leaves behind five grandchildren; Pascal Singletary and wife Melissa, Eric Singletary, Julie Confere and husband James, Jessica Webb and husband Boone, Windy Borrego and husband Jose, and his great grandchildren; Maylina Confere, Camron Miller, Gwen Webb, Stella Borrego, Zachary Borrego, Robert Borrego and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements are being handled by Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow where the family will receive friends Tuesday, May 31st from 10am to 11am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Burial Park in Lakeland. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Home Bible School, 301 West 13th Ave, Mount Dora, FL 32757.
