John H. English

Bartow- John H. English age 93, passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at his residence in Bartow. Born November 21, 1924 in Plant City, he was the son of the late C.J. and Lucy English. His family moved to Polk County when he was 3 years old. John graduated from Haines City High School and then Florida Southern College with a major in accounting. Mr. English served as a Signalman for 3 years in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard during WWII. He and his brother owned Florida Cab Co. in Lake Wales for 3 years. He worked for 5 years with Phillips Petroleum Co. in West Florida as an Internal Auditor before joining the staff of the Florida Auditor General's office, where he retired after 30 years of service. John was one of the 5 main organizers of little league baseball in Bartow and served many years in various positions. He also was a member of the little league football program in Bartow. John was president of the Merrymakers Dance Club, a member and Past President of the Bartow Lions Club, a longtime member or the A.R.P. Church of Bartow and a past Chairman of the Board of Deacons. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Connie English, his son Jesse Beasley, his siblings: C.J. "Jack" English, Jr. and Sara Gilchrist. He is survived by his wife Sally English, his children: Steve English (Patti), Mike English (Andree) and his daughter in law, Marie Beasley. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 24th from 10am to 11am at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow. Funeral services will immediately follow at 11:00am at the funeral home chapel. Interment with committal will be in Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow. The family wants to make a special thanks to Karin Martin, his personal caregiver, and the staff from Cornerstone Hospice for the loving and professional care that they have provided to both their Dad and the family.
