JoAnn Hiers Henderson, age 90, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, November 24, 2022. She was born July 8, 1932, in Bartow, Florida to Harley Lee Hiers, Sr. & Thelma Carlton Hiers. She graduated high school from Summerlin Institute in Bartow and attended Mars Hill University of North Carolina. JoAnn returned home to Bartow, where she met and married her beloved husband of 53 years on January 1, 1957, and where they raised their three children. JoAnn was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she loved her community and spending time with family and friends, her passion for working with young people was her personal ministry. JoAnn loved hosting fish fry get-togethers at the family Lake House, watching her Florida Gators football and basketball games, and talking on the phone with her brothers about game highlights. She worked at the Polk County Courthouse and later for Polk County School Board as an administrative secretary. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Bartow where she was also a church secretary in her early years, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir, and served on several committees. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband James A. Henderson, brother David L. Hiers, sister-in-law Judith B. Hiers, and brother-in-law Reverend Jerry R. Wolff. She is survived by her son Steve Henderson, two daughters Tami Dubose (Tommy) of Bartow and Lynda Altman (Mike) of Lakeland, two grandchildren Brandon Altman (Allison) and Leanna Altman, brother H.L. Hiers, Jr. (Thalia), sister Janice Wolff, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, December 3, 2022, in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Bartow. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Bartow. Interment will be held at Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow, Florida. Condolences to family at www.whiddenmcleanfuneralhome.com.
