James E. Singletary

Bartow - James E. "Brother" Singletary, age 85, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale of Cancer. Born October 30, 1927 in Fort Meade, FL to John and Nora (Dolly) Singletary, Mr. Singletary was a lifelong resident of the area. After graduating from Fort Meade High School, Jim enrolled in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in St. Petersburg, FL. He then signed on with the U.S. Merchant Marines and served as a Helmsman on a troop ship during WW II. Following his tenure with the Merchant Marines, he attended business college in Jacksonville where he met and married Jacqulyn "Jackey" Hatch, his beloved wife of 64 years. Jim served as a sales manager in the phosphate industry for over 30 years, first with Metalcoat and later with Florida Equipment Service. He was a faithful member of the Bartow First Baptist Church. He was a longtime member of the Bartow Lions Club. Mr. Singletary is preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia, Elizabeth and Jonie Ruth. He is survived by his wife Jackey Singletary, three daughters, Cynthia "Sam" McGuirt; Jenny Brown [Steve] & Amanda "Mandy" Singletary, all of Bartow, six grandchildren & nine great grandchildren. Family will receive friends Friday, March 22, 2013 from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church, 410 E. Church Street, Bartow, Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM at the Church. Interment will be held at Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow. Memorials may be made to the Bartow First Baptist Church Building Fund, 410 E. Church St,, Bartow 33830 or Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave, Auburndale, 33823.
