James Glen Adkins

December 3, 1926 — May 10, 2011

Bartow- Mr. James Glen Adkins went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 10, 2011, as a result of respiratory failure, at Highlands Lake Center in Lakeland. He was 84. James was born on Dec. 3, 1926 in Enterprise, Coffee Co., Alabama to Ira Leroy and Annie Dovie (Horsley) Adkins. At 17, James and his family moved to Fort Meade in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Little Rock during WWII. He worked on the Earth Moving Crew at Mobil Chemical for 41 years. James was of the Baptist faith. James was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Dovie Adkins, one sister, Geraldine (Fritz) Coleman, son-in-law, Michael Paul Zielske, and niece, Iris Elaine Hart. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Virginia Adkins of Bartow, his daughter, Beverly Ann Zielske of Boca Raton, his son, Johnny Michael Adkins (Christi) of Homeland, two step daughters; Sheila Bailey of Haileyville, AL, and Vickie Price. He also leaves behind a sister, Annie Laura Franz (Ray) of Sidney, MT, and a brother, Homer Lee Adkins (Lavonne) of Fort Meade. He was blessed with six grandchildren; James Michael Zielske (Kyla) of Boca Raton, Iris Marie Zielske of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa, Ryan Oliver Zielske of Arlington, VA, Joshua Ira Adkins of Gainesville, April Tackitt and Katie Bailey both of Haileyville, AL, and one great grandson, Jonah Michael Zielske. Graveside services will be held Friday, May 13th at 10:00 AM at Homeland Cemetery in Homeland. Rev. Terry Coe will be officiating.
