Mrs. Ida LaVerne Speight, age 89, passed away from respiratory failure Tuesday February 15, 2011. Born May 28, 1921 in Arcadia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Daniel and Ida (Albritton) Whidden. Mrs. Speight was a homemaker and a longtime resident of Bartow. Mrs. Speight was formerly a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Bartow where she was active in the Alter Guild. She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Paul W. Speight. She leaves behind a loving family that includes three daughters; Pam Westberry (Mickey) of Bartow, Lynda Speight of Atlanta, GA, Paula Stratton (Tom) of Melbourne, and five grandchildren; Paul Westberry (Myra) of Simpsonville, SC, Dana Wile of Bartow, Anne Mathews (Harry) of Jacksonville, Bill Stratton (Corynn) of Algeria, and Ted Stratton (Lindsay) of Tallahassee. She also leaves behind four great grandchildren; Rachel Westberry, Michael Westberry, Jessica Wile, and Andy Mathews. Arrangements are being handled by Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 East Main Street in Bartow where the family will receive friends Friday, February 18th from 10 to 11AM.
