Henry Lee Couey

Henry L. Couey, age 89, passed away at home from cancer on Monday, February 17, 2014 in Bartow. Born on February 6, 1925 in Fort White, he was the son of the late Champ and Dessie Couey. Mr. Couey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartow, and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He worked for many years for W.R. Grace and Company as a maintenance mechanic. Henry, better known as "Papa", was a longtime Dixie Youth Baseball coach in Bartow. He is survived by a loving family that includes his wife of 66 years Jean Couey of Bartow, son Gary Couey (Deborah) of Brandon, daughter Sandra Stenger of Bartow, brothers Harold Douberley of Bradenton, Paul Douberley of Palm Bay, grandchildren; Lee Couey, Kim Stenger, Carrie Bell, Hank Stenger, and his great grandchildren; Cody, Kaylee, Caden, Coby, Logan, Kinley, Bradley, and Tanner. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 23rd from 4PM to 6PM at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow. Funeral services will follow on Monday, February 24th at 10:00AM at the funeral home chapel. Memorials may be made to the Florida Methodist Children's Home or Cornerstone Hospice.
