George T. Smith

FORT MEADE – George T. Smith, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at Lakeland Regional Health and Medical Center. Born on February 10, 1948, in Buffalo, NY, George lived a life defined by service, hard work, and a deep love for animals.

A proud veteran, George served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to the rails, working as a Train Master for Norfolk Southern Railway. He remained active in his community as a member of the American Legion.

George was a man of simple pleasures and had a big heart. He was a devoted animal lover who cherished his dogs and spent his retirement years sneaking carrots to the local horses. Whether he was cruising the Caribbean, honing his skill at the gun range, or relaxing to the sounds of country music, George embraced the things he loved.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Danette L. Smith; his brothers, Larry Smith and Jerry Smith; and his sister, Sally Ann Schneider.

His memory will be cherished by his surviving siblings: brother, Edward B. Smith, Jr. of Newnan, GA; and sisters, Mary L. Fitzpatrick and Nancy Lee Bueme, both of North Tonawanda, NY. George’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
