George T. Dunlap, III, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. He was born on May 22, 1935, in Mineola, New York to George T. Dunlap, Jr, and Kathryn V. Dunlap. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife of 67 years Ann Dunlap. He is survived by two sons George T. Dunlap, IV (Meg) of Atlanta, Georgia and Scott W Dunlap (Melissa) of Sarasota, and a daughter Ann D. Murphy (John) of Bartow, and sister, Kay D. Guild, and her four children, all of Boston, Massachusetts, along with eight cherished grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Following his graduation from The Hill School in Pottstown, PA, George attended Princeton University where he played on the Princeton golf team serving as its captain (like his father, who also was a two-time collegiate champ and the U.S. National Amateur Golf Champion in 1933). After graduating from Princeton in 1957 he attended the University of Florida where he received his law degree in 1961.
Upon his graduation from law school George and Ann moved to Bartow, Florida where he practiced law in Bartow for the ensuing nearly 60 years retiring from the Boswell & Dunlap, LLP Law Firm in 2019. During his law practice George was Bartow City Attorney from 1971 to 2007 and served as counsel in many significant real estate matters for a number of major firms in the acquisition of lands for phosphate mining in Polk and Hardee Counties. George was a former Director of Attorneys’ Title Insurance Fund, Inc., having served since 1969 and a past member on the Board of Directors of the Bartow Chamber of Commerce, member of the Bartow Rotary Club including service as a Past President, Paul Harris Fellow, and the recipient of the Medal of Merit for meritorious service within his profession to the greater Bartow community.
George was actively involved in the community serving on the Floral Avenue Elementary School PTA, the Peace River Country Club including serving as its President in 1976, the Red Cross, the Bartow Memorial Hospital, Dixie Youth Baseball including coaching his sons and young athletes in baseball. In addition to representing a broad range of individual and corporate clients throughout his legal career, George always understood that access to justice and the legal system for everyone regardless of their financial circumstances was an essential part of equal justice for all. George’s legal practice exemplified that ethic, and he often assisted those in need without seeking public acknowledgement. In that regard George was the recipient of the Polk County Pro Bono award in 1999 where he was recognized by the Florida Supreme Court for his efforts.
Although George was very proud of his legal career, he was first and foremost a family man who took great joy in actively participating with his wife in their children’s school and extracurricular events. George was an avid fan of all sports but had a particular affection for the Tampa Bay Rays having purchased season tickets at the time of their expansion in 1997. As a devoted Ray’s fan, he attended as many games at the Trop as he could often with either his wife Ann or his grandchildren. He and Ann, who were affectionately referred to as Mimi and Deda by their 8 cherished grandchildren traveled all over the USA -via RV- and the world with their grandchildren.
George’s life is an example of a full life, well lived, that was inspirational to all with whom he interacted, and he will be cherished and remembered with love and affection by all of his family. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 205 E Stanford St. Bartow, FL. Interment will follow at the Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow. Condolences can be made to the family at www.whiddenmcleanfuneralhome.com. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
