Dr. Robert David Mitchell, Jr.

Dr. Robert David Mitchell, Jr., (Bobby), age 89 went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 14, 2025. He was a long-time resident of Polk County, Florida. Bobby was raised in the Fort Meade Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Robert David Mitchell, Sr., and Edith Scally Mitchell. Most of his school years were in Fort Meade, Florida. After high school graduation he earned his undergraduate degree in Physics from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Masters and PhD in Physics from Florida State University. Later he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from The University of South Florida.

Bobby had specialized training in environmental engineering and was associated with Apollo Environmental, Inc. in Gibsonton, Florida. He was a licensed pilot and instrument flight instructor. Bobby served as a Commander in the US Navy.

He is survived by his children Robert David Mitchell, of Tampa, FL, Syne Vallor Mitchell, of White River Junction, VT, James Collins Mitchell, of Tampa FL, Scott Carson Mitchell of Jacksonville FL, two grandchildren, Kai Nylund and Kathleen Mitchell, sister Marilyn Mitchell Mullis (Elbert), and long-time friend Sue Durrance Ross. He was a wonderful uncle to his nephews, nieces, and their children.

Bobby had a kind and compassionate heart and helped many people in their time of need. He will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 9, 2026, at 10 am at McLean Funeral Home, 306 East Broadway in Fort Meade, FL. Interment will follow at Homeland Cemetery in Homeland, FL. Condolences to family at www.whiddenmcleanfuneralhome.com.
