HOMELAND -- Doris Elizabeth Mathis, 84, passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s disease on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 8, 1930, in Berrien County, Ga., Doris was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Columbus and Tinsie Boyd Williams. A resident of Homeland since 1970, she was a homemaker and longtime member of Main Street Baptist Church in Bartow.
Doris graduated from Poplar Springs School in Nashville, Ga., in 1948. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, her church and spending time with her family and friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her brother, J.A. Williams, and twin sister, Dorothy Griner. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, L.B. Mathis, and daughter, Brenda Morton and her husband, Rick, of Winter Haven. She also is survived by her brother, Carroll Williams, of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Other survivors include her granddaughter, Meredith Jean Morris and her husband, Matt, of Orlando, Fla., and grandson, Jonathan Richard Morton and his wife, Ashlyn, of Eagle Lake, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 E. Main St. in Bartow, Fla. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 27, at Main Street Baptist Church, 1140 E. Main St., Bartow, with interment at Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens.
