Donald W. Slocum

Donald W. Slocum, age 83, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at his home in Bartow, FL. Born March 1, 1938, in Groton, NY, he was the son of the late Willard and Winifred (Searles) Slocum. After moving to Florida from Groton, NY, Don was the owner and operator of A & D Cleaning and Laundry in Lakeland and Winter Haven for many years. He was a devout member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Bartow. Don is survived by a loving family that includes his wife of 35 years, Ann. Children include: Donald A. Slocum (Marcia), Richard Slocum (Kimberly), David Slocum (Sarah), Dale Slocum (Paula), his step children: Christine Ivy (Jeff), Julian Rivera (Kelli), Korrinn Rivera; his sister, Betty Pollack (Michael), twenty-three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Their dog Micky looked out for him until the end. Don is preceded in death by a step-daughter, Elizabeth Snowball. Don achieved the rank of Life Scout and 3 of his sons and a grandson became Eagle Scouts with his guidance. He also was very patriotic and every prayer included intentions for the troops and first responders to be safe. Don and Ann started Square Dancing in 1986 and served in many offices in the Square Dance Local and State Association. They danced in more than 30 states, including Hawaii and Alaska, and also Canada. Don’s family was always of the utmost importance to him. During yearly beach visits and yearly travels up the East Coast visiting family along the way, he enjoyed playing card- and board- games competitively with the family. Viewing will be held on Friday, February 18th from 4pm to 6pm at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow, FL. A funeral Mass will follow on Saturday, February 19th at 9am at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Bartow. Don will be placed to rest at Saint Matthew Catholic Church Columbarium in Winter Haven, FL. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Options for Women
