Dlanie Barber

Dlanie Barber 98, of Ft. Meade died of natural causes at Bartow Center on November 19, 2010. Born Dlanie Cowart in Silco, Georgia on June 12, 1912, she traveled to Florida that same year,on a wagon pulled by oxen. She grew up raising chickens, cows, and farming the land in rural Polk and Hardee Counties before eventually settling down on the outskirts of Fort Meade. She worked for the Polk County School Board as a “lunchroom lady” during the 1960's and 1970's at Riverside Elementary School in Ft. Meade, serving lunch to students during school and selling chocolate chip cookies and moon-drops out the back door of the lunchroom after school. She was a fantastic cook. Her cinnamon rolls and yeast rolls were the best. Married to Joe Coulter, now deceased, May 28, 1927. Married to C. A. Barber, now deceased, Dec 4,1942. Mrs. Barber is survived by her sons: Joe Coulter, Hubert Coulter; & Jimmy Coulter all of Ft. Meade; & Calvin Barber of Bowling Green. A daughter: Valeria Murray of El Dorado, CA,; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her sisters Jinnie and Famie, a daughter Frances Free of Texas, a son Jack Coulter of Ft. Meade. Funeral Services will be held Nov. 21, 2010 at 3:00pm at McLean Funeral home in Ft. Meade.
