Clarence A.“Bubba” Boswell, Jr., 82 of Bartow, Florida, died during the early morning hours of November 9th, surrounded by his family, at Winter Haven Hospital. Born in Bartow on March 20, 1927, Mr. Boswell was the son of the late Clarence A. Boswell, Sr. and Margaret Phillips Boswell. He grew up and attended school in Bartow, and in 1945 graduated from Summerlin Institute, which is now Bartow High School. After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Mr. Boswell returned to his home state and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Florida in 1949. After a few years of selling farm equipment and cultivating citrus, he decided to follow the Boswell tradition and join the legal profession. He received his law degree from Stetson University in 1963, and a week later began working with his father in the family law firm which was originally founded in 1900 by his grandfather, Judge Clarence A. Boswell, and Solon G. Wilson. Mr. Boswell was an involved participant in the firm’s representation of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Co., Polk Community College, now Polk State College, as well as many other clients. Mr. Boswell assisted his father as legal counsel to the Polk County School Board, and in 1972 became the first attorney to work full time for the board. In addition to representing the board in matters involving real estate, construction, contract and labor law, Mr. Boswell also represented the board throughout the decades of school desegregation litigation. He remained their attorney until his retirement. Mr. Boswell was a former elder of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Bartow, former member of Bartow Rotary and Rotary International, and Erskine College Board of Trustees. He was preceded in death by his infant son and wife, Betty D. Boswell. He is survived by his former wife, Isabelle Wilson; two sons, Bill Boswell of Bartow; Lex Boswell and wife, Karen; two daughters Daphne Putnam and husband Tim of Winter Haven; Valerie Butler and husband Joey of Bartow; his sister, Jane McDonald and husband Jimmie of Greenwood, South Carolina; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 20th, 11:00 a.m. at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 205 East Stanford Avenue, Bartow Florida. Family will receive friends immediately after the service.
