Bernard "Bernie" L. Howell, 74, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in Gainesville, FL of respiratory failure. He is remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born April 30, 1939, in Indianapolis, IN, Mr. Howell was a resident of La Crosse, FL for several years but lived in Bartow for most of his life. Bernie graduated from Summerlin Institute in 1958. Early in his career, he was a draftsman and worked for the Department of Transportation, on the Alyeska Pipeline in Anchorage, AK, Jacobs Engineering and his own consulting firm. Later in life, he owned the Spee-Dee CB Radio shop in Bartow. His CB Handle was "Redneck". Bernie was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra M. Howell; his son, Lyn C. Howell; his parents, R. Emerson ("Dick") and Dorothy ("Dot") Howell; and a sister, Linda O’Connor. Mr. Howell is survived by his two sons, Layne Howell and his wife Teresa of Gainesville and Jason B. Howell of La Crosse; four beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Ashlyn and Ellyn Howell of Gainesville and Ethan Howell Lang of Lakeland; his brother Marty Howell and his wife, Jolene of Babson Park; his sister, Tina Jenkins of Weaverville, NC; his brother-in-law, Thom O’Connor of Voorhesville, NY; his mother-in-law, Edith King of Moultrie, GA; his sister-in-law, Mary Pearce of Moultrie, GA; his many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the graveside in Bartow Wildwood Cemetery.
