Alverna M. Stenger

Alverna M. Stenger, 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, from natural causes Wednesday, April 17, 2013 in Altamonte Springs, FL. Mrs. Stenger was born in Hartford, Connecticut and raised in Windsor, CT. Following her graduation from high school she was employed by Travelers Insurance in Hartford and later at Phillips Petroleum Co. in Windsor. Mrs. Stenger met her husband, Max H. Stenger, Sr. on a train trip to St. Petersburg, FL in 1943. Following her marriage in 1945, she resided in Bartow for the next 65 years and then Apopka for the past two and a half years. Mrs. Stenger was employed by the Polk County School Board in the payroll department until her retirement in 1982. She was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Society, the Bartow Garden Club, Peace River Country Club, and the A.R.P. Church of Bartow, where she participated with the Spunky Seniors program. After retiring, she divided her time between her mountain home in the mountains of western North Carolina and Bartow. Mrs. Stenger spent her time playing cards with a group of women on the mountain, reading, and knitting or crocheting sweaters, afghans, lap robes, and shawls for friends and family as well as various charitable organizations. Mrs. Stenger was preceded in death by her parents Niels and Viola Mortensen, two brothers, Edwin and Harry Mortensen,and her husband, Max H. Stenger, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Alice S. Middleton (Mickey) of Apopka, sons; Max "Harry" Stenger, Jr. (Sandra) of Bartow, Robert N. Stenger (Lynn) of Bartow, nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and sister, Ellen Rozanski of Granby, CT. The family will receive friends Monday, April 22nd from 6PM to 8PM at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow. Funeral services will follow Tuesday, April 23rd at 10:00AM at the funeral home chapel. Interment will be at Lakeland Memorial Gardens following the funeral ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southeastern Guide Dogs, 4210 77th St. East, Palmetto, FL 34221-9270, Hospice of the Comforter, 605 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714, or a charity of one's choice.
