Allie Hartsfield Lane, 84, passed into the arms of the Lord on Friday, February 23 after a lengthy illness with heart and respiratory failure. He is survived by Barbara Moseley Lane, his loving wife of 60 years, his son Brent Moseley Lane and his wife Cynthia Swaney Lane of San Antonio, Texas and his grandson, Jonathan Logan Lane, a student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He was born in Brazil, Tennessee, the only child of John and Dezzie Lane, but he grew up in Lakeland and graduated from Lakeland High School. Allie was an Eagle Scout and attended a World Jamboree in Mexico in 1936. He attended Washington & Lee University until called into World War II as a U.S. Marine Corps Captain, where he served in the Pacific Theater and China until August 1946. After the war, he and Barbara were married and he returned to W&L, where he completed Law School before being called up by the Marines for Korea. Allie returned to Polk County, was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1953 and entered practice with the Clarence A. Boswell. He served as President of the Bartow Chamber of Commerce and the Bartow Kiwanis Club. He was a long-standing member of First United Methodist Church of Bartow, where he taught the Men's Sunday School Class for over 30 years. He was appointed to the bench as a circuit judge by Governor Farris Bryant in 1965, later becoming Chief Judge of the Tenth Circuit. After more than ten years on the bench, he joined the Lakeland firm which was later named Lane Trohn Clarke Bertrand Vreeland and Jacobsen. He retired from practice in 1991.
Allie was a man of the highest integrity and compassion. He loved his family, his church, his community and his country. He has a grasp of the English language surpassed by few, and had both immense patience and respect for others. He was a good listener and a quiet leader. He was an example to many and a mentor to more than a few young lawyers. He will be missed by all. Family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb 27, 6-8 P.M. at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, 650 E. Main St, Bartow. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb 28, 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 455 S. Broadway Ave, Bartow.
