Lakeland - Albert S. McKenzie, Jr., 70, passed away Friday, December 18, 2015 at Lakeland Hospice House. Born February 8, 1945 in Pensacola, FL, Mr. McKenzie was a resident of Lakeland & Bartow since 1974, moving from Meridian, MS. He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in music education, a masters degree in administration from Rollins College. He was a band director and orchestra conductor in the Polk Schools for over 30 years. He was a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon, Sabbath school superintendent, teacher and choir director. He was a member of the Bartow Breakfast Rotary Club and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Florida Bandmasters, Florida Orchestra and the Florida Music Educators Assocations. He was active with camps and conferences at Bonclarken, serving on the Bonclarken Property Owners Association in Flat Rock, N.C. He was a talented bass player, playing professionally and in church. Al loved his Lord, church, family and the many music students he taught. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha Mann McKenzie, Lakeland, a son: Joe Ryan McKenzie (Mandie), Jacksonville, a daughter: Kathryn Davis (Houston), Franklin, NC, five grandchildren: Owen McKenzie, Ella Ryan McKenzie, McKenzie Davis, Clayton Davis & Emelia Grace Davis. Family will receive friends Tuesday, December 22, 2015 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 205 E. Stanford St., Bartow. Interment will follow at Wildwood Cemetery, Bartow. Memorials may be made to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, Bonclarken Conference Center, ARP World Witness or Camp Joy.
